Description

Lake Baringo has become a world-renowned birding destination for crocodiles, hippos, hyrax, and now giraffes on the Ruko Island Conservancy. As the lake level has increased in recent years, it has attracted large groups of yellow-billed storks and pink-backed pelicans.
Other popular activities on the island include water sports and fishing, and magnificent lodgings with breathtaking views can be found all across the island. Millions of greater and lesser flamingos (who used to reside in Nakuru but have now migrated to this northern lake), as well as greater kudu and hot springs, may be seen in Lake Bogoria, which is a short drive from Lake Baringo.

OlKokwe Island, a rocky outcropping in the middle of Lake Baringo, is home to Njemps settlements and a well-equipped camp. This is a great place to start exploring the lake, with boat rides good for seeing birds and hippopotamuses. Baringo is a great place to stop on your way to Northern Kenya for a safari. Despite the fact that the lake is fed by two rivers, El Molo and OlArabel, and has no visible exit, it is one of only two freshwater lakes (it is somewhat salty, but not enough to harm crocs, hippos, or swimmers) in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley.
